Friday App Review: NewsRack for iPad
This one will be quick since I haven’t had a ton of time to play on the iPad this week :(. NewsRack is a new RSS reader, fairly bare bones, but has excellent google reader support. The feature set for exporting things is great though, and it has Instapaper support so I’m good to go. I was a Feeddler user, but it’s sloooow, and NewsRack caches and is pretty quick, so I’m...

Friday App Reviews: iElectribe and Beatport
This week, I’m gonna mix it up a bit and focus on two great music apps, one for iPad and one for iPhone. There has been a lot of hype over apps like mixr and similar DJ emulations, and I can totally see why. Everyone wants to be a DJ right? But they don’t appreciate that DJing is some seriously hard work. So on that note, on to the reviews. iElectribe from korg The iElectribe,...

I Love Bicycling So Much That I Charge My Clients...
Ok, ok, if you are one of my clients, then please calm down and read a few paragraphs and then if you are still freaking out you can fire me. I sit at a computer of some sort almost all day. When I wake up, I bring my iPad downstairs, make coffee, and check my e-mail. After breakfast, accompanied by some RSS-reading and twitter tweeting, I head up to the ‘work computer’, an old...

Friday App Reviews: iPad Edition! Goodreader and...
Yes, I went early on a Saturday morning and waited in line and was thoroughly embarrassed by the Apple retail workers’ insane enthusiasm for the iPad. As soon as I exited the store with my $499 iPad, I got interviewed by @donpdonp and then went home and watched it on the iPad. So it was a surreal day to say the least. First, lets get the iPad review out of the way. I love it, my...

Graduating from Productivity Porn
I, like many nerd/creative types, can easily get caught in the foggy netherworld of organization. I’m not a particularly neat person, but I do spend a lot of time mentally reordering my thoughts and prioritizing my todos. So of course, the ideal thing to do is to get some sort of productivity system in place and mentally unload all these small and large stresses onto a physical or digital...

Chromocam: Modernist iPhone Photography
You can check out my latest project, Chromocam over here, and be sure to check the blog and gallery which are both powered by tumblr. I am really excited about the app, and having the webpage up, the twitter up, and a new youtube video up is really inspiring to see. On this project I am a one man band, doing the web design, the iphone development, video editing, and graphic design. Phew…...

Current Projects: iPhoneography
I’m working on some new projects lately, so I haven’t been posting too much. Or actually, I’ve been posting on other blogs readying content for when sites go live. So, I really am alive, I swear. My latest project is a series of iPhone photography, or iPhoneography apps. I’m really surprised how awful alot of the apps out there are, given that the iPhone is such a...

The Making of Chromocam: Hi-Res iPhoneography
Over at the iPhoneography blog, as well as at Life in LoFi, the authors are lamenting the fact that many iPhone apps save at a low resolution. And they are puzzled, as they should be. Why would some apps like CameraBag or MonoPhix save at nice resolutions, and yet others save at 320 x 480, the iPhone screen resolution? Well, the answer is… lazy programmers. I can’t say that I...

iPhone App Review: Bit Pilot
Bit Pilot is a new game from Zach Gage, and it’s amazing. It’s probably my favorite iPhone game, but I’m definitely partial to shmups and bullet dodgers, so I’m biased. But the game is so polished, and the gameplay is so perfect for a mobile device like the iPhone, that I’m sure anyone will find it a worthwhile download. The game is somewhat like the classic...

Zines, Independent Publishing, and the Future
If you live in Portland, chances are good that you own a bicycle. And even more amazing, chances are that you ride it. As a Portlander for the foreseeable future, one of the top things on my to-do list was to buy a new-to-me bike. I picked up a pretty janky complete bike at the recent Portland Bicycle Swap Meet for $150, and I’ve got a budget of about $150 to get it in sweetly working...

Oh no! I haven't posted in a month... but here's...
I’ve been slacking pretty hard, but I have good reason. I successfully went apartment hunting, had a couple of DJing gigs, and then I got super ill, as in in a cold or flu. You would think I may have spent some of that downtime wisely but mostly I messed with openFrameworks and cocos2d (hint hint) and watched a ton of movies. I also played with my iPhone. Assassin’s Creed 2 I saw...

Friday (Saturday?) App Reviews: Instapaper Pro and...
So I’m a little late, already on my second friday app reviews, but I’ll get on the ball, I swear. I am in Portland again, finally, and I’m so happy, but its been stressful looking for an apartment, as it always is. Anyway, last week I said I would get the paid version of instapaper and write a review so here it is: Also.. keep reading for a review of doodle jump (its...

Friday iPhone App Reviews: Part 1
I’ve decided that since I’ve been pumping some $$$s into the app store lately, both to check out the competition ;) but mostly to get inspired, I might as well generate some content from it. So I figured I’d reduce my ADD a bit, try to digest the app fully, and then poop out a little review. Metronome: This app is very slick. It models a real metronome in terms of the way...

Freelancer's Dilemma: Solved
Right now, I am somewhat financially secure. Of course, I don’t think that there are many software developers out there who would say a guaranteed income of $1500/mo is secure. And I supplement this with a good amount of freelance work, but its mostly for the time being as I gather funds to move back to Portland, OR. So what am I doing? Well, after reading this blog entry on why you...

Why I Love YouTube and Why It's Getting Better
When I first went on YouTube, it was a revelation. I think it was my senior year of university, and YouTube had probably just launched that month. I was directed to it to watch the latest Naruto episodes (whatever! this is like season 1 alright!), but I stuck around to peruse the ridiculous amount of content that was on it even then. You see, I am of the generation where if we wanted to watch a...

Japanese Lighting and Denki Advertising
If you’ve ever been to Tokyo, or seen it in movies, you know that areas like Shinjuku and Shibuya are completely awash in light almost 24/7. There are huge neon structures peddling everything from pachinko and pornography to coffee and the iPhone. One might think that this incredible amount of advertising would be maddening, but for several reasons, Japan has managed to gracefully...

Really Rad Super Simple Syndication: How I am...
RSS, or Really Simple Syndication has been around for a long, long time (apparently its over 10 years old), but I have met few people in real life that are big fans of it. Usually it seems like some people (say, your parents) have never heard of it, or other people (like your average web-a-holic) tried it and didn’t like it. The reasons for liking and disliking it are varied, but I have...

MCRP v2 Track - Spoiled Fruit Basket
The MCRPv2 is kind of over, and here is my track: MCRP V2 ayuh aka the easterislandhead - spoiled fruit basket  by  easterislandhead But although it seemed like a good idea to have this available to work on during the holidays since people typically have off and that sort of thing, it turned out nobody had time to work on it after all, so its being extended by a week. I might do some more...

Since I started actively posting a few weeks ago, the site has gone through quite a few changes. At first, it was pure XHTML + CSS, and I was updating the front page manually. It was the case of having a design, but not having the skills to create it myself. I could have outsourced it for a few bucks to some entry level Javascripter in the Ukraine or India… or I could take it on myself,...

New iPhone App - Cafe Clock
I released a new iPhone app recently: it’s called Cafe Clock and it helps you track your cooking on Zynga’s facebook game “Cafe World” . The app is doing fairly well which is good of course, and despite the fact that it isn’t going to earn me a TED talk or anything, I’m kind of proud of it. I initially submitted it to the iTunes store about a month ago, but...

Monome & The Arduinome
In several of my videos and entries I have already made reference to either the monome or the arduinome project, without saying much about what it is all about. So, with my participation in the upcoming Monome Community Remix Project (v2), I thought I’d share some thoughts on the monome and my experiences. First of all, the creators of the monome are amazing. They have designed an...

Gear Lust Sucks
As someone who enjoys making music, its so easy to fall into the trap of endlessly pursuing new equipment. “If only I had the Dave Smith Rackmount Poly Evolver, then my leads would really shine…” This sucky phenomenon is often referred to as “gear lust”. As I started getting into music production, I pirated a copy of Ableton Live as well as some VSTs like Massive...

My Completed iPhone Apps
Prior to starting this blog, I first started using tumblr as the support pages for the iPhone apps I’ve made. Tumblr allowed me to have a quick, easy to copy, and easy to maintain little site up and running super quick, plus with the way I’ve styled them it barely looks like a blogging engine. That’s one of the greatest things about tumblr, that you can shape it to be what you...

Monomix 1
I did a short “tenminmix” for YouTube today. Since I’m kind of staying indoors alot in this Toledo winter, it’s tough to keep up on music for me. Usually I’ll put a couple of albums on the iPod and try and digest them away from the computer before I start mixing them. But anyway, this mix was recorded live with my arduinome interfaced with the pages app and Ableton...

ARDJ 1.5 Released for Mac OS X 10.5+
The latest version of my Augmented Reality DJ System (ARDJ) is up for download from this Drop.io.  Included at the drop are the source code with Xcode project, a set of markers created by Laura Andrews, and a compiled binary.  Also look to my YouTube account for a series of screencasts on getting the system working with Ableton Live.

About this Theme: or How I Learned CSS and XHTML...
As someone who has unfortunately decided to become a “creative person” “professionally”, it only took so long to realize that I had an entirely awful website.  I will spend hundreds of hours working on apps, music, and visuals and never generate any kind of productive publicity because without a decent website, (replete with personality filled blog), nobody is going to...

Thump Session: Electro
Marek Bareza created an amazing, free groovebox app for both the iPhone and for Mac OS X 10.5.  It’s a really fun little program named Thump, reminiscent of a Korg Electribe stripped down to the bare essentials.  I made a screencast of me playing with some really simple patterns in a Detroit Electro style.
